Trek Overview
The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic and beautiful crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas. Starting from the lush green valleys of Kullu and ending in the arid landscapes of Spiti, the trek offers a stunning variety of landscapes in just six days. You walk through dense forests of pine and maple, across alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, past glacial streams, and finally cross the stark, high-altitude Hampta Pass at 14,100 feet. This moderate trek is ideal for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. It offers not only panoramic mountain views but also the cultural contrast between the two valleys.
Another highlight of the trek is a visit to the iconic Chandratal Lake, a stunning crescent-shaped alpine lake in the Spiti region (subject to road conditions). This trek offers the best of both worlds — lush greenery and barren landscapes, making it a perfect adventure for nature lovers and photographers.
Trek Highlights
- The Hampta Pass Trek offers a rare Himalayan adventure—a dramatic crossover from Kullu’s lush green valleys to Spiti’s cold desert landscape, crowned by the breathtaking Chandratal Lake. - Pass through charming Himalayan villages like Sethan, known for its Tibetan heritage and unique mountain lifestyle, before entering the pristine alpine wilderness.
Detailed Itinerary (5 Days / 4 Nights)
Day 1: Drive Manali to Jobri and Trek to Chikka (10,100ft) 1-2hrs
The drive from Manali to Jobra takes about 1–2 hours, covering 15– 17 km and passing through 30–42 hairpin bends.
Enjoy panoramic views of the Kullu Valley, Beas River, apple orchards, and dense pine forests along the way.
Jobra, at around 9,800 ft, serves as the trek’s starting point and initial acclimatization spot. The trek begins at Jobra, near the Allain Duhangan Hydropower Plant.
Day 2: Chika to Balu ka GheRa (11,900ft) 6-7hrs
Trek: Chika (3,048 m / 10,000 ft) to Balu ka Ghera (3,627 m /11,900ft),4–5 hours.
Route: The trail continues along the Rani Nallah, passing through beautiful meadows filled with wildflowers and grazing sheep. Expect several stream crossings, some over wooden logs and others on foot. The route gradually ascends, with some rocky and sandy patches, leading to the sandy riverbed of Balu ka Ghera, your campsite for the night.
Trek from Balu Ka Ghera to SheaGohru via Hampta Pass (14,100 ft) 7- 8hrs
Trek Distance: Balu ka Ghera (3,627 m / 11,900ft) to Hampta Pass (4,270 m / 14,065 ft)to Shea Goru/Siagoru (3,932 m / 12,900 ft), 7–9 km, 8–10 hours.
Route: The day starts with a gentle walk along the river, followed by a steep ascent through a rocky, boulder-strewn section to Hampta Pass. The climb to the pass is demanding and may involve crossing snow patches, especially early in the season. From the pass, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The descent to Shea Goru is steep and can be slippery, especially if snow is present. The landscape changes dramatically from green Kullu meadows to the arid Lahaul valley. Camp at Shea Goru by the riverside.

Route: Begin with a river crossing (icy cold water), then trek along the valley floor with views of Spiti’s barren mountains. The trail is mostly descending, with some rocky sections and stream crossings. Reach Chhatru, where the Hampta, Spiti, and Rohtang valleys meet. If the road is open and weather permits, drive to Chandratal Lake (additional 70 km round trip). Return to chatru for overnight stay
Day 05: Drive from Chatru to Manali (6,398 ft) 3-4hrs
Drive: Chhatru to Manali, 60 km, 4–6 hours. Route: Drive back to Manali via the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass (depending on season and road conditions), enjoying the dramatic shift from the barren Spiti landscape back to the lush green valleys of Kullu. This road also has many checkposts and army tents. We will drive through the Atal Tunnel to reach Manali. Our Hampta Pass Trek route ends at noon in Manali.
